How long does an MOT take?
A standard car MOT usually takes about 45 minutes to an hour. The tester is not allowed to rush the set inspection, and cannot carry out repairs during the test itself. If the car passes you can drive it away straight after; if it fails, the time depends on the repair.
Why might it take longer?
Many garages ask you to leave the car for a half day rather than wait, so they can slot the test between jobs. If the car fails and you want the repair done there and then, add the time for parts and labour. Leaving the car at the test station and returning within 10 working days keeps you eligible for a free partial retest.
Can you get an MOT while you wait?
Often yes, if you book a specific slot. Ring the garage and ask for a wait-and-collect appointment. Independent test stations and fast-fit chains both offer these, though at busy times (the end of the month is busiest) you may need to book ahead.
